Explanation of Life Span

June 15th, 2009 | Filed under: Humor

One day, God created the dog and said:

‘Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.’

The dog said: ‘That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?’

So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said: ‘Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.’

The monkey said: ‘Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?’

And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: ‘You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years..’

The cow said: ‘That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?’

And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said: ‘Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.’

But man said: ‘Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?’

‘Okay,’ said God, ‘You asked for it.’

So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

Unity of Believers

June 13th, 2009 | Filed under: Bible Texts

It is understandable that a group of people would choose certain ways of worship and then seek out a Church which practices worship in their preferred way.

However, whatever our personal preferences, we should be careful to obey the teachings of Jesus on matters of acceptance.

Luke tells us that the disciples went to Jesus one day telling the story of how they had stopped people who were not of their group, from casting out demons in the name of Jesus.

Jesus told them they were wrong to do so. He said if they were not against Him, then they were for Him.

Luke 9:48-50

49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

Some may find this perplexing in light of what is recorded in Luke 11:23, Jesus said that those who were not working for Him or with Him, were actually against Him.

The key word in this latter verse, is “working.”

It is talking about those people who do nothing at all.

You can also apply further logic based on Luke 6:43-45 when Jesus speaks of the good tree and the good fruit.

This text can also lead some misguided followers into judgment… but that is not the intention of the text. It is simply a way for you to know if one’s heart is indeed a heart for God and for good.

The Kingdom of God is about love and peace.

Luke 6:37
Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.
Do not condemn others, or it will come back against you.
Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.

Dear God, we thank you for those who boldly go forth in Jesus’ name to put into practice the teachings of Jesus. May we, your children, take great care not to offend you by offending or slandering others who follow you. God give us strength to live in your Divine will and love those who are not of our local group. Help us to achieve unity among the believers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
